Water: Healthy Catchments Healthy Oceans
Yes we have began a new topic in MESH! This enviromentally focused unit of ‘Healthy Catchments – Healthy Oceans’ began on Monday. We got into an environmental mindset by watching the Dr. Seuss cartoon ‘The Lorax’ and discussed the enviromental issues that the story addressed. I then got each member of the class to complete What do you know about water?. Complete this sheet and bring it to class if you have been away.
Myths and Legends: Novice
Today we completed a venn diagram comparing the similarities and differences between the Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories and Greek Myths that we have read in class. We have started developing our own mythical characters which we will use in the myths that we are going to write. You can get the instructions here Myths and Legends Tasks.
Myths and Legends: Practitioner
The ‘Practioner Group’ for Literacy has begun a unit on Myths and Legends. For Task One you are required to read 3 Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories and 3 myths from an ancient civilisation of your choice and fill out an Analysis Sheet for each one. I am providing books from which you can source your myths in class. You can also read myths on the sites listed on the Blogroll links on this page.
Ancient Civilisations: Matrix Tasks
Hi Group 3. Your essays are due tomorrow – Thursday 18th. Yesterday I introduced the class to the Matrix, a grid of activities from which you must choose any two to complete. Get the matrix here Matrix Sheet. You have the remainder of this week and next week to complete your two matrix tasks. Have fun, this is your chance to use your creativity!
Persuasive Speeches
On the last day of term both groups 2 and 5 began presenting their persuasive speeches. All speeches were of a very good standard. Some students were very convincing in both their use of voice, body language and the arguments and evidence that they presented. For those of you who have not presented yet, we will be doing more presentations after the holidays. The speeches are being assessed by myself as well as by you. Each student has created their own rubric to mark three other students’ speeches. If you have been away and haven’t created your own rubric yet get it here: Blank Persuasive Speech Rubric. Just fill in with dot points the features of a practitioner, apprentice and novice speech.
Habits of Mind
Hi Green Group. On the last Thursday of term 2, I introduced the class to the Habits of Mind Click here to see an outline and decription of the habits Habits of Mind defintions. We then began looking at some of the words used in the Habits of Mind and finding out what they mean, using the laptops we started completing the following worksheet Habits Dictionary Activity. There is a link to an online dictionary at the top of the worksheet. Use this to look up the definitions of the words.
Ancient Civilisations: Essay Writing
Hi Group 3. If you missed the last couple of classes before the holidays, you missed learning about essay writing. We are currently writing essays on the topic ‘Where would I rather live Ancient Greece/China or modern day Australia?’.
